The initial step is for your GP to physically examine your ear. Utilizing an instrument with a gentle at the end, called an auriscope or otoscope, they will search for anything that is not regular, including; discharge, a bulging ear drum, perforated ear drum or an object that could be blocking the hearing.
You may also be asked about any pain or discomfort which you may be experiencing.

Whispering or using a ticking watch. One ear at any given time will be blocked and the nurse or physician will test your listening to with sounds associated with varying volumes. In the whispering test, you might have to repeat the words out loud, when you hear all of them whispered.
Tuning fork. The tuning fork is a Y-shaped metallic object that, when tapped, produces sound waves at a fixed pitch. It's often used for tuning instruments. Doctors use a tuning fork by leveraging it on their shoulder or knee, to really make it vibrate, then keeping it at each side of your head. It will be held first in the air near your ear, to see how you hear sounds that are transmitted through atmosphere vibrations. Then it might be held to the bone behind your hearing (mastoid bone) to see how well you can hear once the waves are transmitted to your inner ear through the bone.
Audiometry. In this test you are given earphones to put on, which are attached to a piece of equipment. Sounds of different quantities (loudness) are played through the earphones, and you have to indicate whether a person heard them. You might have to raise a hand or even press a button. Children might have to move the coloured block.
Bone fragments oscillator. A slightly different check can be used to test exactly how well you hear seems that are sent through the bone rather than the atmosphere. This uses a musical instrument called a bone oscillator positioned against the bone behind your ear.
